Retailers, be ready for Memorial Day weekend

If you own a store, you know that Memorial Day weekend likely means extra business.

In 2018, consumers said they expected to spend an estimated $36 billion during the three-day holiday weekend, according to MFour Mobile Research and Vistar Media.

That works out to an average of $489.46 per adult with men expected to spend an average of $608.25 and women $397.84.

Retailers need to be ready for the weekend, financial website ValuePenguin advises.

It suggests some things storeowners can do to prepare, including:

Make sure you have enough staff on hand.

But before you assign people to work during the weekend, find employees who are willing to work. Some employees have plans with their families or may not want to work on Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor those who gave their lives for this nation in military service. Ask employees what you can offer to make it more attractive for them to work during the holiday weekend.

Also, have enough inventory of items that have been popular sellers during previous Memorial Day weekends.
