A new apprenticeship program will train cooks to work in the restaurant industry by providing them with on-the-job training and classroom instruction.

The program, which launched this week with an announcement at Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar in Rehoboth Beach, is a partnership between the Delaware Restaurant Association and the Delaware Department of Labor.

The Delaware Cook Apprenticeship Program is being piloted in Sussex County. SoDel Concepts, which owns Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar and other restaurants, is partnering on the project.

“I’m very excited to announce this new apprenticeship opportunity for Delawareans,” Secretary of Labor Cerron Cade said in a news release. “With the strong and steady growth of the food services industry, this is a great example of government and industry working together to ensure that worker and employer needs are met. Apprenticeship is an excellent workforce training tool that is being used more and more by local, regional and global employers.”
