Store owners, here’s how you can capture your share of post-holiday sales

It’s been a strong holiday season for store owners with the National Retail Federation forecasting a sales increase of between 4.3 percent and 4.8 percent compared with the 2017 season.

Christmas may be over, but this is no time for retailers to take a breather.

Two of the 10 busiest shopping days of the season — Wednesday, Dec. 26 and Saturday, Dec. 29 — are still ahead, according to ShopperTrak, which analyzes retail sales data.

And an NRF survey found that 51 percent of shoppers said they plan to shop post-holiday sales from Dec. 26  to Jan. 1. Another 27 percent said they plan to spend gift cards during that period.

So, with that in mind, here are some ideas from Small Business Trends on ways for retailers to keep the holiday shopping momentum going:

1. Offer discounts on post-holiday purchases.

2. Take advantage of the inevitable returns by offering discounts if shoppers make an additional purchase.

3. Show appreciation for your loyal customers by hosting an in-store event or offering an exclusive deal.

4. Follow up by email with holiday shoppers to ask about their shopping experience and how it could be improved.

5. Pour some of your holiday profits into a marketing and advertising campaign to drive traffic to your store.
