New projects in Milford, Smyrna and Wilmington to receive state rebates

A dozen projects that will help strengthen downtown Wilmington, Smyrna and Milford will receive a total of $5.5 million in rebates under a state program administered by the Delaware State Housing Authority.

The projects include construction of  48 condominium units on the Mispillion River in Milford and renovations to the former Metal Masters/Harris Manufacturing plant in Smyra, which will be converted into a farmers’ market, and repurposed for light manufacturing and warehousing.

Rebates will also go to several residential or mixed-use projects in downtown Wilmington, including a 53-unit apartment house for artists on West Street.

“This latest round of Downtown Development Districts funding will continue our commitment to revitalizing our downtown business districts and surrounding neighborhoods,” Governor John Carney said in a press release. “These investments are a vital tool in our economic development toolbox and will have a long-term impact on these communities.”

The $5.5 million in rebates will leverage $103 million in private investment.

They bring to $31.6 million the amount of rebates awarded and $597 million in private investment leveraged since the Downtown Development District program started in 2014.
