On Tuesday, the Delaware Division of Small Business, New Castle County, New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, NCCCC Emerging Enterprise Center and YWCA Delaware offered the first in a series of daylong programs where small business owners connect with representatives from large Delaware companies in a particular industry during a speed matchmaking session.

In addition, Byron Short, executive vice president of the Delaware Contractors Association, and Tricia Clendening, president of HR Strategies, spoke on panels during the morning session.
Construction firms are experiencing a shortage of workers, speakers at Tuesday’s meeting said. The shortage is likely to grow, they said, as the average age of construction workers is 58 years old.
That means the industry will have to groom the next generation of brick masons, plumbers, electricians and other workers by educating students and their parents about opportunities in construction.
The industry offers many opportunities for women, said Lorri Grayson, president of Middletown-based GGA Construction.
