Study finds optimism among business owners

A Feb. 2018 survey of almost 3,000 business owners found most are optimistic about how they expect their business will do in 2019.|

Seventy seven percent of owners of businesses in existence five years or more said they expect to increase profits this year, according to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation report, “Breaking Barriers: The Voice of Entrepreneurs.”

Optimism is even more widespread among owners of startup companies, those in business five years or less. Eighty nine percent of those owners said they expect to see profits increase in 2019.

At the same time, more business owners expect business conditions to improve in 2019 than expect them to decline.

Among startup owners, 45 percent expect improvement, compared with 38 percent who expect conditions to remain about the same and 17 percent who expect them to worsen.

Among owners of businesses five years or older, 44 percent expect conditions to improve. That compares with 37 percent who expect them to remain the same and 19 percent who expect conditions to worsen.
