New survey shows business owners remain optimistic

Business owners remain optimistic, new NFIB survey shows.

Business owners remain optimistic about the state of the economy and their own growth prospects, according to the latest monthly survey from the National Federation of Independent Business.

The October reading of 107.4 in the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index continued a two-year trend of business owners feeling upbeat about where the economy is headed and that their business will benefit.

Business owners aren’t just feeling optimistic, they’re responding by spending money to expand,  according to the report.

Sixty percent of business owners reported hiring employees or trying to hire.

That number would likely have been higher but 38 percent said they had job openings for which they couldn’t find workers.

Meanwhile, more than half (59 percent) said they spent money on capital items such as machinery, vehicles or real estate.

Of those:

  • 43 percent reported purchasing equipment
  • 26 percent purchased vehicles
  • 18 percent purchased buildings or improved existing facilities
  • 14 percent purchased fixtures or furniture
